School of Biological Science and Technology (SBST) of Hunan Agricultural University was established in March 2005. It was formed by merging the Department of Biotechnology of the School of Science with the Department of Ecology of the School of Agronomy. The predecessor of the Department of Biotechnology can be traced back to the Basic Course Department of the School of Agronomy, which was established in January 1961.Since its establishment, the school has made good progress in personnel training, discipline construction, scientific research and social services. As a research and teaching-oriented college, SBST integrates undergraduate, master's, doctoral and postdoctoral students，and the social influence of it has been continuously enhanced.

SBST has 29 professors, 33 associate professors, and 70 PhDs. There is one candidate of the New Century Millions of Talents Project (National Level), three recipients of special allowances from the State Council, one national advanced returnee,  one new century outstanding talent from the Ministry of Education, one young or middle-aged expert from Hunan Province, two experts of special allowances from the Hunan Provincial Government, two reserve candidates for leading academic and technical figures in the new century in Hunan Province, six candidates for New Century 121 talent project in Hunan Province, six discipline leaders of universities in Hunan Province, two of the One Hundred Experts Program in Hunan Province, one of the “Furong Scholars” Program in Hunan Province, one outstanding teacher in Hunan Province, one Furong Teaching Master in Hunan Province, one recipient of the Outstanding Young Scientist Fund in Hunan Province, one recipient of the Teaching Dedication Award in ordinary universities in Hunan Province, and one top-level talent at the university level.

The school has more than 1800 current students, including over 1380 full-time undergraduate students, over 370 postgraduates, and nearly 50 doctoral students. There is one postdoctoral research station and one doctoral program in the first-level discipline.

Scientific Research Platforms and Social Services

Scientific Research Platform

SBST has 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, and participates in the construction of 2 national engineering centers，hosts 1 key laboratory co-constructed by the ministry and the province, 6 key laboratories of the Department of Science and Technology of Hunan Province, 4 engineering laboratories of the Development and Reform Commission of Hunan Province, 1 provincial research institute, and 3 professional laboratories (training centers) co-constructed by the central and local governments.

Scientific Research

SBST conducts research in biology and ecology based on key laboratories and central platforms. Over the past five years, SBST has undertaken more than 60 projects of the National “863 Program”, “973 Program”, Natural Science Fund, and Science and Technology Support Program. The average annual funding for scientific research is nearly 20 million Yuan. It has won 1 National Scientific and Technological Progress Award, 5 provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards of Hunan Province, 2 Natural Science Awards of Hunan Province, and 2 Technology Invention Awards of Hunan Province. SBST has been granted more than 100 patents by the state, has published more than 20 monographs and 1,000 papers in journals.

Social Services

SBST actively adapts to the needs of social development, particularly local agricultural development, and provides social services such as the establishment of teaching and research bases and technology transfer. The school has organized 16 social service teams that focus on professional services for the development and utilization of biological resources, natural products, edible fungi, cultivation and application of traditional Chinese herbs, modern organic agricultural products, plant growth materials, energy plant resources, cultivation and rapid propagation of high-quality seedlings and ecological environment protection.

Through these efforts, the school has contributed to the local development, poverty alleviation and rural revitalization.
