The School of Chemistry and Materials Sciencetraces its origin to the BasicCourses Department established in 1951, was renamed the Department of Basic Sciences in 1984, and merged with the Department of Biotechnology and the Computer Center in 1997 to form theSchool of Science. With the continuous development of disciplines, the Department of Computer Science, the Department of Biotechnology, and the Department of Information and Computing Science were separated from the School of Science, and in August 2019, the School was renamed the School of Chemistry and Materials Science, which is a teaching and researchorientedschool offeringprograms at theundergraduate, master’s and doctorallevels. The school is positioned asafoundationfor fundamental disciplines and thebroaderagriculture discipline. |
The school has 79 faculty members, including 58 full-time teachers (17 professors and 22 associate professors), and 42 doctoral degrees holders. The faculty is strong with 7 doctoral supervisors and 33 master’s supervisors. Among the faculty, there are 5 Shen Nong scholars, 2 outstanding young scholars and 2 excellent young scholars in Hunan Province, 1 young talent in Huxiang region, 1 participant in the “One Hundred Experts Program” (enterprise), 1 Furong Scholar (Youth Program), 1 member of “Hunan 121 Talent Project”, 2 participants in the “3635 Talent Project”, and 5 youth backbone teachers in Hunan Province. The school has four teaching organizations: the Department of Chemistry, the Department of Materials Science, the Department of Applied Physics, and the Chemical Experimental Teaching Center. The total value of teaching and scientific research equipment of the school is more than 30.38 millionYuan, the teaching and research space is 8,600 square meters, and there are 13 off-campus practice bases, including 1 provincial demonstration off-campus practice base. |
There are 792 full-time undergraduate students and 76 master’s students. |
Over the past five years, the school has achieved remarkable results in educating students, with a postgraduate examination rate of 40%, of which 50% were admitted to prestigious universities such as Tsinghua University. Chen Ximing’s achievements were featured in the People’s Daily (one of the three students in the province), and 1 provincial first prize winner and 3 national third prize winners of the Challenge Cup, and 1 national gold award of the Internet+ Entrepreneurship Competition. |

ScientificResearch The discipline of chemistry is listed the top 1% in the global ESI ranking. Over the past five years, theschool has successfully applied for 2 provincial“double first-class” construction specialties and 2 provincial“double first-class” courses. Students have won six national first prizes and second prizes in discipline competitions,as well as nearly 30 provincial first prizes. Theschool has been awarded 1 provincial second prize and 2 third prizes for provincial scientific and technological progress, and 1 second prize of Fok Ying Tung Youth Science Award from the Ministry of Education, moreover, the school has obtained more than 30 authorized patents,and publishedmore than 350 SCI papers, and 5 provincial excellent master’s papers have beenawarded. |
SocialServices The school takes the advantages of scientific and technological talents, actively engages incooperation between academia, industry and research, and enhancesits ability to serve the local economy and society by combining theory with practice.With the aim of “centering on crops and serving agriculture”, the Interdisciplinary Joint Laboratory of Agrochemical Materials carries out scientific research on crop growth environment and regulation, mainly including crop light environment regulation and soil environment regulation. |
