School of Fisheries
General Information The discipline of fisheries of Hunan Agricultural University was established in 1985 as a Freshwater Fisheries major. In 1987, undergraduate enrollment in the Freshwater Fisheries program began. In March 1994, the Department of Fisheries was established within the School of Animal Science and Technology. In January 2023, the School of Fisheries (SF) was established, offering three undergraduate programs: Aquaculture, Aquarium Science and Technology, and Aquatic Animal Medicine. Among them, Aquaculture and Aquatic Science and Technology were selected as pilot majors for the State Training Program of Excellent Agricultural and Forest Talents by the Ministry of Education in 2014. The discipline of Fisheries was approved as a first-class undergraduate major construction in Hunan province in 2019, and a national first-class undergraduate major construction in 2021. |
SF has a total of 47 faculty members, including 39 full-time teachers. Among them, there are 9 professors, 15 associate professors, 7 doctoral supervisors and 20 master's supervisors. SF has one member of the Professional Teaching Steering Committee for Fisheries Majors under the Ministry of Education, one director of China Society of Fisheries, one director of the Comprehensive Experimental Station of Modern Agricultural Industry Technology System of the Ministry of Agriculture, one recipient of the first "Exemplary Sci-tech Workers" award in Hunan Province, two experts in the Hunan Province Fisheries Industry Technology System, one special professor and one young scholar of the "One Hundred Experts Program" from Hunan Province, one young talent of the "Furong Scholar" program in Hunan Province, one vice chairman and three executive directors of Hunan Society of Fisheries, two recipient of the “Youth Backbone Teachers in Provincial Colleges and Universities”, and one recipient of the Outstanding Young Fund in Hunan Province. |
SF adheres to the educational philosophy of integrating “industry, academia, and research” in its development. It has undertaken the construction of one comprehensive experimental station for the national freshwater fish industry technology system and one Xiangjiang River-Zishui River station of the Dongting Lake Aquatic Biological Resources Monitoring Center under the Hunan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. The college maintains long-term cooperation in talent training and research projects with enterprises such as Guangdong Haid Group, ZhengDa (Chia Tai) Group, Dabeinong Group, Tongwei Co., Ltd., DaHu Co., Ltd., Dongjianghu Ecological Fisheries, and YuMeiKang Group. In the fields of Aquaculture and Sciences of Fisheries Resources, SF has already undertaken a total of 255 projects, including key projects of regional innovation and development funded by the National Natural Science Foundation (U20A2063), as well as national, provincial, and ministerial-level projects, and industry-related projects. The total research funding has exceeded 61.21 million Yuan, with an average annual research funding per faculty member of 314,000 Yuan. 24 authorized patents have been granted and 159 research papers published. It has developed hybrid strains of grass carp with resistance to hemorrhagic disease, transgenic grass carp strains with disease resistance and stress tolerance conferred by the Mx gene, and new materials for female nucleus development in grass carp. Additionally, five new products have been invented, including novel protein sources and stress-resistant additives for the aquaculture feeds of grass carp, Chinese longsnout catfish, and yellow eel. Distinctive germplasm resources of Chinese softshell turtles with excellent growth performance have been explored. The school has completed the investigation on the standardized utilization of fishery resources in reservoirs in Hunan Province and drafted documents for the provincial government office. Furthermore, it has established a provincial fisheries informatization comprehensive service platform, providing important theoretical and applied technological support for the upgrading and development of the fisheries industry in the entire province. |
Discipline and Degree SF offers three undergraduate programs: Aquaculture, Aquarium Science and Technology, and Aquatic Animal Medicine. Among them, Aquaculture and Aquatic Science and Technology have been selected as pilot majors for the “Reform of the Educational System and State Training Program of Excellent Engineer and Excellent Agricultural and Forest Talents” by the Ministry of Education in 2014. The discipline of Fisheries serves as a foundational subject for the multi-billion-dollar fisheries industry in Hunan province, also as a key discipline during the 12th Five-Year Plan period and a key discipline for the "Double First-Class Project" construction in Hunan Agricultural University. |
